국내 소분류 제조업 시장의 경쟁지표 측정 : 이윤탄력성을 중심으로
본 연구는 광업·제조업조사 2007~2019년 자료를 이용하여 최종소비재에 가까운 5개의 소분류 제조업(수산물 가공 및 저장 처리업, 알코올 음료 제조업, 가죽, 가방 및 유사 제품 제조업, 기초 의약물질 및 생물학적 제제 제조업, 의료용품 및 기타 의약 관련제품 제조업)을 대상으로 산업 내 시장경쟁의 정도를 가늠할 수 있는 경쟁지표들을 산출한다. 특히 국내 연구에서 찾아보기 힘든 소분류 제조업종의 ‘이윤탄력성 추정치’를 제시하고, 이를 ‘다른 경쟁지표들’(허핀달-허쉬만 지수, 상위기업집중률, 러너 지수)과 비교한다. 분석결과에 따르면, ‘허핀달-허쉬만 지수’와 ‘상위기업집 중률’에 비해 ‘이윤탄력성’과 ‘러너 지수’가 보다 안정적으로 시장경쟁의 정도를 측정하는 것으로 나타난다. 분석대상 산업의 허핀달-허쉬만 지수나 상위기업집중률에서는 급격한 추세의 변화가 관찰되나 러너 지수나 이윤탄력성에서는 그러한 변화가 관찰되지 않는다. 그리고 이윤탄력성과 러너 지수 간 일관적이고 뚜렷한 선·후행 관계는 발견되지 않는다. 본 연구는 다양한 경쟁지표들에 대한 추정치들을 비교·분석함으로써 산업 내 경쟁의 정도를 정확히 예측할 수 있는 근거를 마련한 다는 점에서 연구의 학술적 의의가 있다. 또한 강건한 경쟁지표의 측정은 반독점 정책의 수립 및 평가에 꼭 필요한 선행 작업이라는 점에서 연구의 정책적 의의가 있다.
Estimating Market Competition in Manufacturing : Profit Elasticity and Other Indices
Using the Mining and Manufacturing Survey in 2007-2019, this paper estimates market competition by three-digit manufacturing industry code. The indices include Concentration Ratio(CR3), Herfindahl-Hirschman Index(HHI), Lerner Index, and Profit Elasticity. The results show that profit elasticity or Lerner index were found to be more suitable in terms of stability than HHI or CR3 as indicators for measuring the degree of competition occurring in the market. Rapid changes were observed in HHI and CR3 trends, but no such changes were observed in the Lerner index or profit elasticity trends. And, we find no consistent and clear lead-lag relationship between the estimates of profit elasticity and Lerner index. We contribute to the literature on market competition in two ways. First, this paper is the first to provide estimates of profit elasticity by three-digit manufacturing industry code in Korea. Second, we assess the robustness of each competition indicator by comparing the estimates of profit elasticity with those of CR3, HHI and Lerner index.
