Homogenizing Interpretation against Epistemological Differences between Hayek and Mises

Jinyoung Bae

Hayek and Mises are masters who represent the modern Austrian School. Followers of Mises, so called Misesians, criticize Hayek from several perspectives. One of them is that Hayek denies the power of reason and his methodology is ambiguous and inconsistent. According to Rothbard who is representing Miseians, Hayek emphasizes some sort of tropism or instinct. Society or the market is its product. It is sharply contrasted to Mises who emphasizes human reason and will in the traditions of rationalism. In this paper I will critically review this assesment of Rothbard and try to find some clues that can narrow the epistemological gap of these two masters. Hayek has left a lot of discourses away through papers and books such as 「Sensory Order」,「The Fatal Conceit」,「Individualism and Economic Order」,「Law, Legislation and Liberty」,「The Road to Serfdom」, etc. His academic interests are far beyond economics. He confesses there is the constitutional limitation of man’s knowledge and he cannot know more than a tiny part of the whole of society. These seem to make his methodology to be ambiguous and inconsistent. But this cannot lead to the conclusion that he stands epistemologically and methodologically sharply against Mises. He wanted merely to demonstrate anything beyond the power of reason. Hayek never denied or neglected the power of reason. Therefor it cannot be said that he turned away from the methodological dualism even if he is not a thorough subjectivist. He merely demands that reason should be one that recognizes its own limitations. It is directed against the norms of reason that guide socialism and against the neoclassical equilibrium analysis that never shows a real market process.
