디즈니랜드, 디즈니월드, 그리고 코스의 정리
본 연구는 디즈니사의 두 번째 테마파크인 디즈니월드가 거래비용의 최소화와 외부효과의 내부화라 는 두 가지 목적을 달성하기 위해 설립되었다고 설명한다. 디즈니랜드와 같은 테마파크를 운영할 경우 관광객의 유입으로 인해 연관 업종인 호텔, 음식점, 소매점 등을 통한 이윤의 창출 기회가 부여되는 긍 정적 외부효과가 발생한다. 따라서 테마파크의 주체는 업종 간 거래비용의 최소화를 통해 긍정적 외부 효과를 내부화시킬 수 있는 연관 업종으로 사업 영역의 확대를 시도하게 된다. 또한 연관 업종으로 사 업 영역을 확대해 긍정적 외부효과의 내부화가 가능하다면 추가 수익에 대한 기대로 인해 테마파크에 대한 대규모 투자의 유인 구조가 형성된다. 하지만 디즈니랜드의 경우 테마파크 운영에 대한 경험이 전 무(全無)해서 연관 업종으로 사업 영역의 확장이 가능한 내외부적 여건을 사전적으로 조성하는데 실패 했다. 대규모 부지를 확보해 호텔, 음식점, 소매점 등을 망라한 다양한 사업 영역에 투자가 집행된 디즈 니월드의 건립은 거래비용의 최소화를 통해 긍정적 외부효과를 내부화하려는 시도로 이해될 수 있다.
Disneyland, Disney World, and Coase Theorem
This paper analyzes why Walt Disney promoted the second theme park, the Disney World in Orlando, FL, while having the first one, the Disneyland in Anaheim, CA already. Specifically this paper argues that the Disney World was established to promote two purposes, (1) the minimization of the transaction cost and (2) the internalization of the positive externality. When a theme park such as the Disneyland is established, it creates the positive externality of accompanying the profit opportunities in the related businesses such as hotels, restaurants and retail shops. Furthermore, such business expansion opportunities incentivize to further increase the investment in the theme park. Yet, as the Disneyland was the very first theme park that was launched, Walt Disney failed to create the ex ante internal and external conditions leading to the ex post failure of controlling the businesses surrounding the Disneyland and halting the further investment in the Disneyland. The acquisition of a vast size of the lands for the Disney World can be understood as the strategy to set up the proper condition to minimize the transaction costs and to internalize the positive externalities.
