Trends in Intergenerational Income Mobility in Korea

Jin Young Lee

Using Korea Labor and Income Panel Surveys data from 1998 to 2019, this paper first estimates Korea’s intergenerational income elasticity by year. Intergenerational income elasticity estimates with income measured by total household income ranged from 0.11 to 0.17 over the 2000-2019 period, and showed a stable trend with several rises in 2002, 2006, 2011, and 2017. Elasticity estimates with income measured by individual monthly wage showed a more volatile trend than the household income estimates. When adding a control for the interaction of child’s age with parental income, I find larger elasticity estimates, which ranged from 0.20 to 0.32, but with less statistical significance. Estimates for sons were a bit lower than estimates for daughters. The results suggest that intergenerational income elasticity in Korea has stayed around 0.27-0.30 since the late 2000’s.
